Flatbed Trailer Shipping

Through Special Service Transportation’s brokerage division, we are able to offer flatbed service for any size shipment. A flatbed trailer is needed when you are shipping freight that needs to be loaded from the ground or from the side of the trailer, or for your shipments that are over sized. Flatbed trailers are open, so if you have freight that you do not want exposed during travel, we are able to provide a tarping service. Tarping covers your freight to protect it from weather and other outside factors during transit.

Flatbed trailers are most commonly are 48 feet in length. Additional sizes include 20ft, 40ft, 53ft, and stretch trailers to accommodate shipments with extreme length. If you are focusing on finding the cheapest flatbed rates, you should try to utilize a 48ft flatbed as those are the most plentiful and have the greatest availability. If you have a shipment that requires less than 48ft of trailer space, then our partial truckload service might be the best fit for you!

Each state has different laws stating the legal length, width, height, and weight of freight traveling on their roads, and therefore require different permits to travel with over dimensional freight. Special Service Transportation is well versed in permitting regulations and will make sure that your freight is traveling legally and with the most reliable carriers on the road. We understand that heavy haul freight shipping is a service that requires top of the line knowledge and service from the freight provider. Whether your shipment is barely over the legal dimensions, or requires permitting for multiple portions, Special Service Transportation will handle it with ease.

What are the differences between shipping on a flatbed trailer and shipping on a dry van trailer? The biggest difference is just that on a flatbed trailer the freight is exposed or tarped during transit rather than being sheltered by the walls of a dry van trailer. The other differences to note are how the freight will be loaded and unloaded onto a flatbed trailer, and the ability for a flatbed trailer to haul over-dimensional freight. If you are not sure which service is right for you, just give us a call! We will help you find the most cost effective and safe way to ship your freight.
