Brokerage - LTL (Less Than Load)
LTL shipping is offered through the brokerage division of Special Service Transportation. LTL is a service that is best for your shipments that are under 5k lbs and less than 5 pallets. Although we can use LTL for shipments that are larger than this, it is usually not cost-effective. For shipments right on the border, we will compare the price to our partial service to make sure you are getting the best price available.
LTL is a unique service that requires the freight to be classified through NMFTA rules, and the price is based on that class, as well as the weight. Finding your freight class can be difficult, but our staff at Special Service Transportation is happy to help you! SST uses nationally known and top ranked LTL carriers, such as R&L, UPS, Saia, FedEx Freight, and Roadrunner. A complete list of freight classes and LTL carriers, please see below.
Many freight classes are decided based on the density of the shipment. For a rough idea of the class of your shipment, feel free to use our density calculator!
Density:
Measure the height, width and depth of the shipment in inches and weight in pounds. Measure to the farthest points, including skids or other packaging.
Estimated class based on density:
- Less than 1- class 400
- 1 but less than 2 – class 300
- 2 but less than 4 – class 250
- 4 but less than 6 – class 150
- 6 but less than 8 – class 125
- 8 but less than 10 – class 100
- 10 but less than 12 – class 92.5
- 12 but less than 15 - class85
- 15 or greater – class 70
